THE "AHA" MOMENT
two minds are better than one
The brain's architecture has captivated thinkers and researchers for millennia. Its hemispheric design is anything but accidental. Understanding this is the key to shaping our experiences—and realizing our visions.
You've heard plenty about your hemispheres. You've likely seen hundreds of compelling, easy-to-grasp illustrations depicting their 'functions.' Most of them are wrong.
But the truth can change what you imagine is possible.
TWO MINDS: A HOW CONVERSATION
Pop culture illustrations—the left brain does X and the right brain does Y—are well-intentioned. They're a product of insights that do show up in studies. The problem? They put a what conversation where a how conversation belongs.

The left and right brains don't handle different things. They handle things differently. And this matters because one is better at seeing and integrating resources.
BREAKING THROUGH
Modern neuroscience reveals how hemispheres deal with information that is emerging.

At any given time, your left brain prefers to know what you know. It's the primary home of your brain's default mode and salience networks. With smaller, more closely networked neurons, the left hemisphere likes to use its own maps. This networking strategy is incredibly efficient for accessing solutions that are readily available. When they aren't... the left brain can search endlessly for solutions its networks simply do not have access to. The lived experience of this networking strategy can be so circular and frustrating that progress starts feeling impossible. (Sound familiar?)
The good news? Your right brain prefers to know what you don't. It's got more curiosity about emerging dynamics. It's also got more space to do its networking (it's longer and wider in most places than the left is). With broader networks and larger neurons, it likes seeing and sensing—and helping the whole brain integrate—freshly available resources. Its networking style, global and executive in nature, makes it far less daunted by complexity and vastly more equipped to facilitate insight.
Wait, you say: If my right brain is so resourceful, why am I stuck?
That's a good question, and it has an answer. As it turns out, your right brain is the quieter, more visual one. Your left is noticeably louder—and since language is networked left (80-95% of the time), when there's a problem, this hemisphere has a LOT to say. Brainsavvy tools help us replace its chatter with experiences of vital and visionary progress—salient experiences that help shape our left brain.
